Travel
insurance is a way to provide protection
and cover in the event of something unforeseen
happening to you whilst on your travels
in a foreign country. Whilst you are traveling
it is possible that you could fall ill
or have an accident, have money or luggage
stolen, and your travels could subsequently
be cut short, resulting in added costs
for arranging transport back home. The
potential cost of mishaps such as these
can run into thousands of pounds or dollars.
All of these risks and more can be avoided
by a taking out a suitable travel insurance
policy, so that you don’t need to
worry.
Modern
travel is very safe, and it is generally
less of a headache to try and organise
journeys abroad than it would have been
even as little as ten years ago, thanks
to the emergence and growth of the internet.
Regardless of how well you are organised
however, many things can still go wrong
while you are abroad, which is why it
is advisable to take out a suitable travel
insurance policy before your departure.
Of
course the specifics change with each
policy, but generally there is travel
insurance widely available that provides
cover for personal belongings (including
cash); medical expenses while abroad,
delays, legal expenses, cancellations
and curtailment. The price of your insurance
policy will vary in accordance with how
much cover is provided; normally the more
cover that is provided by your policy,
the more expensive your policy will be.
The price is also dependent upon the part
of the world to which to plan to travel,
how long you will be away for and what
activities you plan to undertake while
you are abroad.
Of
particular concern to insurers are the
activities that you wish to undertake
while you are abroad. If you are planning
on skiing or undertaking “extreme”
sports of any kind (such as snowboarding
or bungee jumping) then the insurers should
be informed so that insurance can be arranged
for those activities. If you are planning
to hire a car while abroad, your existing
car insurance policy may provide a certain
level of cover, but you should make sure
that you will be fully insured whether
it is through the car hire agency or otherwise.
Your home insurance may also be of some
use while travelling abroad, as in some
cases cover is provided for possessions
that you take abroad with you (such as
cameras, for instance). As with any type
of insurance, you will find the best deal
only by shopping around. You should research
the different types of insurance available,
so that you know exactly what you need,
and don’t end up paying for more
than you have to. |
